Overall, though, his suggested Rouse is headed down a road far more challenging (for him) and intriguing (for the listener) than his 1998 Slow River debut, Dressed Up Like Nebraska. I usually play to audiences about the size of the waitstaff here.” The hyper-attentive Park West crowd appreciated Rouse’s music, but his attempts to interact verbally with the audience were awkward. On other songs, Cronin deftly played melodica and added golden notes from a muted trumpet.Ī few songs into his set, Rouse quipped, “This is probably the classiest joint I’ve played. On the beautiful “That’s What I Know”, Rouse sang lead and strummed an acoustic guitar while Cronin gracefully alternated between trumpet and xylophone.

Cronin, who also played on the EP, proved an exceptional accompanist, adding splashes of color that greatly enhanced Rouse’s canvas without muddying the compositions. The pair debuted material from a new EP, Chester, a collaboration between Rouse and Lambchop frontman Kurt Wagner. Which made his fine duo performance with Lampchop multi-instrumentalist Dennis Cronin on this night a pleasant surprise.

JOSH ROUSE SETLIST FULL

seeing Josh Rouse on Oct 27th in Mpls, and this report made me even more excited.Josh Rouse’s recent performances with a full band, such as his showcase at this year’s South By Southwest music conference, have been about as engaging as a Senate subcommittee hearing on retail sales tax adjustments, beset by underdeveloped melodies, lightweight vocals and a woeful lack of stage presence. "Country Mouse" is growing on me, but I still think it's Rouse's weakest album since "Home." I actually think that would be a great title. Great post!Īt first I thought you were saying that "I am a failure to you all and I forgot it" was the title of Collett's new album. Great vid, too.Ĭatching him when he comes to New York in about a month or so - can't wait. I'm glad he's always done his own thing, though. While it's interesting to think about how he has progressed, it's such a shame that his music isn't out there because of where he may or may not have been categorized in the past. I've been a fan for so long, and it's interesting how his later stuff has caught on so well in the blogosphere. Here's a short clip of him performing Hangover Days last night, which he's also duetted with Feist on. Support was provided by the wonderful Jason Collett from Broken Social Scene, whose lyrical imagery is amazing, and has a lovely voice with an unexpectedly sharp, raw crackle to it that pierces me. Hollywood Bass Player (demo in Valencia at home) Here's a sample, it's for sale at the shows too:Ĭlear Coast (again with band at Eric Fritch's house) It's called Country Mouse Companion, and it digs up demo versions, lost tunes, old recordings and different versions of songs that made it to the album.

I've been really digging the little bonus EP of nine songs that comes with the new album.

Here was the setlist, and it's always dim in the Bluebird but I tried with a few still shots also: I randomly found myself talking to his mom after the concert, who was charming and just pleased as punch at both the show and the support. The Bluebird was very full for a Tuesday night, with lots of enthusiastic fans - and Josh's family who came in from Nebraska for the show. It was excellent and I highly recommend catching him when you can. I've been trying to catch Rouse live for over two years, but this was my first success - I very thoroughly enjoyed his unique fusion of soulful songwriter rock with elements of jazz, blues and funk, along with his velvety smooth voice. Josh Rouse kicked off his current tour last night in Denver in support of his excellent new album Country Mouse, City House.
